Prof. Dr. Ulrich Beyerlin

We express our sorrow at the passing of Prof. Dr. Ulrich Beyerlin after a serious illness. Ulrich Beyerlin belonged to the Institute from 1973 until his retirement in 2009. For many years he reliably and successfully managed the editing of the Zeitschrift für ausländisches öffentliches Recht und Völkerrecht (Heidelberg Journal of International Law). His research interests focused particularly on environmental law. Here, he provided important publications that further developed this complicated field and enhanced the reputation of the Institute. We will gratefully remember Ulrich Beyerlin as a friendly, companionable, tolerant colleague with an earnest academic concern.

Prof. Dr. Ulrich Beyerlin studied law at Eberhard-Karls-Universität in Tübingen from 1963 to 1968. He joined our Institute in 1973 immediately after taking his second State Examination. In 1975, he obtained his doctorate with the thesis „Die humanitäre Aktion zur Gewährleistung des Mindeststandards in nicht-internationalen Konflikten" (Humanitarian Action to Guarantee Minimal Standards in Non-International Conflicts)(Berlin 1975). In 1986, he achieved his professorial qualification with the post-doctoral thesis "Rechtsprobleme der lokalen grenzüberschreitenden Zusammenarbeit" (Legal Problems of Local Transfrontier Cooperation) (Berlin 1988).
